Undefeatable Samurai

I'm in a real life video game role playing as a pirate samurai. I'm wearing a giant hat and slaying my foes with a long sword. My enemies are faceless grey humanoid figures that are relatively easy to defeat. The only problem is I can't figure out how to block incoming attacks. I'm sprinting around the place engaging in battle but only staying alive using my powerful attacks and exploiting power ups. It's very strange being a video game character and I feel out of my depth.
