Munich

I am in Munich traveling. I find myself in an area of the city that seems to be nothing but small restaurants, one after another, where they serve sausages and and beer. Many of them with open air seating in front. Many of them are crowded with people. As I walk I am sort of swept along with all the people walking along the narrow streets. I come upon a small establishment that doesn’t look too impressive and there doesn’t seem to be anybody inside. The storefront and signage is different from all the others. Whereas the others all have the traditional old-world type of appearance with wood paneling and their names in old European-looking writing, this one has a more modern and clean appearance with the name cleanly written in modern metallic-looking lettering. Frankly, I’m not impressed and I find the modern look a little off-putting, but I’m hungry and I can see the place is nearly empty, while all the other places seem packed with long lines of people waiting for a table, so I decide to check it out. I walk in and see the chef with his back to me cooking something on a stove. The only other patron is a woman sitting at a table near the entrance. I look up at a menu and see the standard German fare. While I’m doing this the chef/owner offers me a beer and a plate with some food to sample. It looks delicious so I decide to sit down and try it. It tastes great so I decide I’m going to eat here, and the chef starts preparing a plate for me. I sit down next to the woman, who speaks little English, and suddenly I realize, to my amazement, that the chef is Vladimir Zelensky, and the woman I’m sitting with is his wife. I am totally overwhelmed with excitement and awe. Zelensky casually serves me a stein of beer and a plate of freshly grilled sausages with German potato sides. he sits down across from me at the table and I start telling him, as I’m eating the delicious food, how much I admire him and how excited I am to meet him. He is extremely gracious and tells me he and his wife are trying to live a regular life after the war, and he’s doing something he enjoys while getting to meet people. His wife is super nice, but has trouble with English, so we talk as best we can about things of no particular importance. I am so excited to be sitting at the table with the two of them. At some point some of the wife’s friends stop by and sit down with us, and Zelensky returns to the kitchen to cook up some food. I ask Zelensky if I can get a picture of the front of the restaurant with him in it and he agrees. We step out to take the picture, but we aren’t out long because more customers are entering. I talk to his wife about previous travels in Europe, and we talk about whether my name, Mark, is a name for old guys in Germany now. Inside a traveling notebook I find a ticket with several punches in it with each punch representing a time I ate at one of the local German restaurants. After so many punches you get a free meal from one of them. Zelensky punches my card for me. I’ve finished eating and I notice Zelensky’s wife is now sitting at a table with her friends. I thank Zelensky for the wonderful meal and say goodbye. I leave the restaurant in a sort of amazed daze about what just happened. I quickly find a place to sit and pull out my journal to write about what just happened.
