finding friends

I was a reporter in a foreign country. Someplace cold. I didn't want to be there any more. I was trying to convince someone to let me leave. To be reassigned. Them I saw Kelly was there and I changed my mind. This is was where I wanted to be. I was walking around looking for her at what had suddenly become a formal (Christmas?) party when I saw Gary Stoney sitting in the floor in a hallway comforting two or three young children. He was trying to make them feel better about someone leaving. At first I thought it was their nanny, but then Gary told me in confidence that it was their mother, who was also his long term girlfriend. She had suddenly been acting irresponsible and seemed to have suffered a drastic change in her personality. I could see Gary was extremely upset and concerned for the children. His gf was an heiress to a regionally successful jewelry store chain and he explained that she was was threatening the business and their future by mis-using business assets and wildly spending money. We discussed the possibility of a sudden mental health condition. I walked outside into the parking lot. I overheard Gary's gf speaking to what must have been her mother. She was telling her mother about her plans to become an actress and how she wanted to audition for upcoming plays. This was totally unlike her and her mother refused to support the effort. She accused her daughter of abandoning her family. The gf said she didn't care and said she was leaving the party bc she had more important places to be. The mother sternly told her that the car she was looking for was owned by their company and she would not be using it to drive anywhere. I found myself walking in a department store with long aisles of merchandise. At some point I came upon Jacob who was picking out cheap practical items for work.
