This kid from the 1950's dropped out of school to become a horror movie special effects guy. A young teacher (not much older than himself) was giving away one spot at a special school in Hollywood where he taught this stuff. He wanted an apprentice to teach everything he knew to, someone young that would pick up on it quickly, and then be able to come up with his own ideas, so that they could work togetherto create brand new special effects that no one had ever seen before, neither Hollywood or the movie-goers. And he got exactly what he was looking for in this young man. He had thick blonde wavy hair and the cat eye glasses everyone wore in the 50s, and always had a big smile on his face, secure enough in himself that he didnt care that his big front teeth showed when he smiled liked that. He kind of looked like a young blonde Steven King. He was a really sweet, happy guy though. Everyone liked him. When he won the scholarship, his church set up a goodbye for him. He tried to reject the invitation to go to the churchs get together, thinking they wdnt like it if they saw what he was going to be doing, but he When he went, he walked in( it was like one of those huge mega-churches), and they immediately began to play the scene that had won him the scholarship on large screens around the church. The whole church watched lovingly, and when it was over, they clapped and cheered. This scene plays out in his mind his whole life as he remains dedicated to christ. When the two boys advanced into old age, they naturally started getting less jobs and was eventually replaced by younger men, such as they had been when they had started out. As their family (or whomever i happened to be to them, family or care taker that cared about them very much), I cd see the joy in their eyes each time they watched the old movies they had worked on, or talked about the special effects they had done. I could also see the joy leave and sadness enter their eyes as these movies or stories came to an end. So one day I got together a big group of middle and high school kids to come watch a couple of the mens old movies and listen to the two now old men talk about their experiences. I hung up old black & white pictures of the men when they were young, just starting off in their career. And I talked to the group before hand, explaining to them just how important this was to the men. I expected them to be on their best behavior, to act interested, and if they paid attention, they probably really would be interested because what these two men had done really was very exciting. As I watched the students listening to the men, everyone excited and everyone participating, with a huge smile on my face, feeling good about the joy I had brought these two men , I woke up...
